May 16, 2017 | Baseball
Tyler Webb lined a two-run single to left to win it
Memphis went into the ninth trailing 8-5 before Webb smashed a double into the gap in left-center to clear the bases and tie the game 8-8. The Tigers trailed yet again in the 12th inning before scoring three in the bottom half to win it. Jason Santana lined a single to left field that scored one run to keep the game alive before then scoring all the way from first on Webb's game-winning hit.
Webb finished 4-for-7 with five RBI and two doubles. Chris Carrier was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Zach Schritenthal was 3-for-5. Ryan Garner recorded the win after tossing just 1/3 of an inning.
Colton Neel was the star on the mound though, tossing a career-high five scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out a career-best seven batters.
Memphis took a 2-0 lead on Carrier's 13th home run of the season, a two-run shot to straightaway center field in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers could have had more in the first but left the bases loaded in the inning.
Murray State came right back to tie it up 2-2 with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the second inning.
The Tigers grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the second inning. Carrier did the damage again with an RBI single to left to make the score 3-2. Memphis left the bases loaded again though in the second inning.
Back-and-forth the teams went as the Racers took the lead right back with three more runs in the top of the third inning. They scored on more in the fourth to make the score 6-3.
Memphis got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4. Brandon Grudzielanek singled and went to third after a wild pitch and an error. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Trent Turner.
Murray State came back though to extend its lead to 8-4 with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Andy Bowman smashed a pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to trim the lead to 8-5.
Memphis will close out the regular season with a three-game series against Tulane at FedExPark Thursday through Saturday.
