Memphis had a 3-1 lead before Knights scored five in the fifth
ORLANDO, Fla. – Memphis scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead but UCF came right back to score five in the bottom half and came out on top 7-4 Friday night at UCF Baseball Complex. The Tigers (23-20, 4-9 AAC) pounded out 12 hits but left 12 runners on base in the game.
Memphis will try to even the series with UCF Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
UCF snagged a 1-0 lead after loading the bases with nobody out in the second. Memphis starting pitcher Drew Crosby did a great job to limit the damage though, getting a double play that kept it to just one run.
The Tigers wrestled the lead away from the Knights with three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth. Brandon Grudzielanek started the inning with a single and was brought home to tie the game on a double by Chris Carrier.
Trent Turner and Zach Schritenthal then both lined RBI singles to give Memphis a 3-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived though as UCF stormed back to completely erase the Tigers' three-run inning with a five-run frame in the bottom of the fifth. The Knights had four hits and a walk in the inning and two runs scored on wild pitches.
Memphis got a run back in the sixth as Tyler Webb led off the inning with a solo home run.
UCF got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth after a walk and an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-4.
Takoda Metoxen pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Ryan Garner finished off the game with the final two outs in the eighth inning.
Five different Tigers had multiple hits in the game and seven different Tigers had at least one hit.
