Tigers snap five-game losing streak

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis got back in the win column with a 5-1 victory over USF in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at FedExPark. The Tigers (22-19, 4-8 AAC) dropped the series, losing the first game of the doubleheader 11-6 to the Bulls.

The pitching duo of Jonathan Bowlan and Colton Hathcock were dominant in the series finale for the Tigers. Bowlan started and pitched six innings and allowed just one run on four hits. The sophomore struck out five batters and picked up the win to improve to 4-4 this season.

Hathcock came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and finished the game to record his 10^th save of the season, which ranks third in single season saves at Memphis. He pitched three scoreless frames with six strikeouts.

Memphis went from having no hits through three innings to quickly tallying three in the fourth, including a bases-clearing double by Trent Turner to put Memphis ahead 3-1.

Alec Trela gave Memphis some insurance in the eighth with a two-run homer to extend the Tigers' lead to 5-1 and seal the win.

Memphis jumped in front of the USF in Game 1 of the Sunday doubleheader when Chris Carrier blasted the Tigers into a first-inning lead with a two-run home run to left field.

USF did one better in the next half inning, taking the lead with a three-run homer off of Memphis starter Connor Alexander in the top of the third. It got worse from there as the Bulls extended the lead to 6-2 after four more hits and an RBI groundout.

The Bulls added a run to the lead in the top of the third and another run in the fifth to make the lead 8-2. USF put the game away with three more runs in the sixth to go up 11-2.

The Tigers fought back to score four in the sixth to cut the lead to 11-6 but it was too little too late.
