INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Memphis athletics program ranked among the top NCAA Division I institutions in community service for late 2016-early 2017, NCAA Team Works and Helper Helper announced Friday.
The over 300 Tigers student-athletes helped Memphis earn a No. 25 national ranking for community service among all NCAA Division I schools. In addition, the Tigers women's soccer team earned a No. 2 ranking for all NCAA Division I women's soccer programs.
"I am very proud of the coaches, student-athletes and administrators who have contributed to this top-25 ranking," said Tom Bowen, Memphis Director of Athletics. "It is a testament to the type of people that are part of the University of Memphis family and their commitment to excellence on the field of play, in the classroom and in the community."

Memphis is one of two American Athletic Conference institutions in the nation's top-25 for community service, joining Tulane which was 22nd. The Tigers women's soccer team was the only American Athletic Conference program that earned a top-five ranking in any league-sponsored sport.
Throughout the year, Memphis student-athletes and teams spend time visiting elementary schools and reading to schoolchildren, giving talks to various youth groups/organizations, conducting skills clinics for youth, organizing the Tigers' annual Christmas toy charity drive and assisting in the Memphis Grizzlies Girls Summit that celebrated Title IX's 45th anniversary.

This is not the first time Memphis ranked among the nation's best in community service. The entire Tigers athletics program was No. 23 in 2015. That same year, Memphis women's soccer was fifth among all NCAA Division I women's soccer squads. In 2016, the Memphis rifle team advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Team Works and Helper Helper's postseason bracket challenge.
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, and Helper Helper, a volunteer management and tracking platform, launched the community service competition to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities. The schools' rankings are based on the amount of service hours completed and the participation of student-athletes.
