Junior lefthander tosses career-high innings with career-high strikeouts
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis starting pitcher Drew Crosby tossed a career-high 7 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts but USF came out on top with a 4-2 win Friday night at FedExPark. The Tigers (21-18, 3-7 AAC) tough skid continues with a ninth loss in the last 10 games.
Crosby allowed just three runs on seven hits and two walks in his career-long outing. His previous high for strikeouts was seven against Southern Illinois earlier this season
USF snagged an early 1-0 lead on a pair of singles in the top of the first inning. Crosby avoided further first-inning damage by getting out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.
The Bulls doubled the lead in the second inning after a one-out double and a two-out RBI single. USF added a run to its lead with a solo home run in the top of the sixth to go up 3-0.
Memphis got its first run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Colton Neel raced home on a wild pitch.
Tyler Webb scored the Tigers other run on an error in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Bulls tacked on a final insurance run in the top of the ninth off of reliever Blake Bennett to seal the game.
Memphis will try to even the series against USF Saturday at 2 p.m. at FedExPark.
