Track And Field Posts Eight First-Place Finishes Saturday

Criticos, Pryke sweep men's, women's javelin crowns.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – University of Memphis' Michael Criticos and Ashley Pryke swept the men's and women's javelin titles, respectively, to pace the Tigers' effort in Saturday action at the 2017 Joey Haines Invitational. Southeast Missouri hosted the meet.
It is the third-straight week Memphis won both the men's and women's javelin crowns, with Criticos and Pryke winning all three. Criticos' 226-7 (69.06m) throw outdistanced the runner-up (191-4) by over 35 feet, and Pryke's 166-1 (50.63m) effort was nearly 35 feet farther than the second-place throw (131-6).
Other first place performances were: Davon DeMoss in the men's 200 meters (20.99), Aaron Persinger in the men's 400 meter hurdles (54.12), Memphis men's 4x100 meter relay (41.39), Cera Chavez in the women's 200 meters (24.00), Dorina Baiker in the women's pole vault (13-3.5; 4.05m) and the Tigers women's 4x400 meter relay (3:56.27).

2017 Joey Haines Invitational Highlights
- Junior Lauren Wheeler continued the assault on her personal-best in the women's 5000 meters. Entering the 2017 outdoor season, Wheeler's best was 19:09.81. In the opening meet at the Mar. 18 Rhodes Invitational, she cut her personal-best by 19 seconds to 18:50.78. On Saturday, Wheeler bettered that mark by 15 more seconds at 18:35.57.
- Sophomore Davon DeMoss won the men's 200 meters in a personal-best time of 20.99. His time bettered his previous mark by nearly 0.5 seconds.
- Junior Dorina Baiker won the women's pole vault with a personal-best 13-3.5 (4.05m). She surpassed her previous best by two inches.
- Freshman Cera Chavez had three top-two finishes Saturday. She won the women's 200 meters (24.00) and ran a leg on the first-place women's 4x400 meter relay (3:56.27). Chavez placed second in the women's 100 meters (11.89). Her times in the 100 and 200 meters both were season-bests.
- Sophomore Naaman Norment placed second in the men's 800 meters in a personal-best time of 1:52.91. His time was 1.5 seconds faster than his previous best.
- Freshman Josh Hamlet ran a season-best 16:17.63 in the men's 5000 meters. He bettered his previous top time by 22 seconds.
- Junior Michael Criticos won the men's javelin with a season-best 226-7 (69.06m) throw.
- Junior Megan Briley ran a personal-best 4:50.52 in the women's 1500 meters. Her previous top time was 4:53.93.
- Sophomore Ashley Pryke's three javelin throws this outdoor season were better than her 2016 season-best throw of 160-10 (49.03m), which at that time was the school record.
