Football Showcases Spring Work in Friday Night Stripes
Apr 15, 2017 | Football
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis football team technically still has one practice left, but on Friday night, the team showed the results of their first 13 practices in the fourth edition of Friday Night Stripes.
With Tiger fans on hand, the team arrived to its traditional Tiger Walk and proceeded to take to the field, offense working against the defense. The one offense went out and scored on a five-play drive, which featured a pair of 20-plus yard passes to both Tony Pollard and Anthony Miller. Darrell Henderson capped the drive with a 17-yard scamper to the end zone.
The ones came back on two series later and again found the end zone, with the Riley Ferguson and Anthony Miller tandem teaming up for a 55-yard pass and a 10-yard pass for the touchdown. Ferguson passed for 113 yards and one touchdown in a short night of work, while Miller finished with three catches for 90 yards and the touchdown.
The bulk of the work with the offense the rest of the night finished with the back up quarterback competition between Brady Davis and David Moore. Both passed for over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Matt Williams came in to finish the night for the offense on the last drive. Moore also rushed for one touchdown to round out his night.
The game on the ground was highlighted by the multi-threat Tiger running back corps. Henderson finished with 89 yards on seven carries, with two touchdowns, while Patrick Taylor finished with 72 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, Memphis had a pair of interceptions (Jonathan Cook, Austin Hall) and forced a fumble (Colton Cochran). The defensive front also tipped a number of passes (Jackson Dillon, Christian Johnson). Another tipped pass resulted in Hall's interception, which he returned 65 yards.
After two quarters of play, the overtime period featured a pair of guest coaches with the headsets. Gary Parrish's Playmakers edged Tom Schad's Fighting Schads, 15-14.
Memphis will close out its spring practice slate on Monday and will then focus on final exams.
The team's 2017 fall season gets underway with an Aug. 31st game against UL Monroe. Season tickets are available now at www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
