MEMPHIS, Tenn. – March Madness is this week for the University of Memphis rifle squad!
The Tigers are sending two shooters, senior Amy Fister and junior Makennon Doran, to the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championships Friday-Saturday, Mar. 10-11 in Columbus, Ohio. Doran and Fister both learned of their selections to compete in the smallbore discipline Feb. 22.
Ohio State University is hosting the national event. The NCAA Championships for smallbore begins Friday at 9 a.m. (CT). The smallbore relays wrap up at 1:30 p.m. (CT), with the discipline's final to start at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
"I'm so proud of Amy and Makennon and what they accomplished," said head coach Butch Woolbright. "This is Amy's fourth time at the NCAAs, so she is a postseason veteran. Makennon is making his first NCAA trip, but he's shot in some big national matches when he was in high school.
"Amy and Makennon posted some solid scores at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier and conference championships, so hopefully they can carry that over to this week's match. I'm excited to see how they compete Friday."
It is Fister's fourth-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance. The senior was a member of the 2014 squad that placed fourth in the nation and then competed in smallbore in 2015 and 2016. Doran is shooting in his first NCAA Championships event.
Aside from the 2005 and 2014 team appearances, the two individual performers chosen for this postseason are tied for the most at a single NCAA Championships in program history. The Tigers also sent two individual shooters to the NCAA Championships in 2004 and 2011.
Fister's NCAA selection is her third-straight in smallbore. She shot a 577 (20th) in smallbore in 2015 and a 570 (42nd) at last year's championships. This season, Fister posted a 580.6 average in smallbore and shot over 580 in eight of her 13 appearances in the discipline, including a season-best 585 twice in consecutive matches at both the Ole Miss Open and Tiger Open. She shot a 582 and placed seventh in smallbore at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier.
The Kutztown, Pa., native continued her career improvement in smallbore in 2016-17. She raised her smallbore average (580.6) by a point from last season (579.6) and over five points from her sophomore campaign (575.1).
Fister competed in both disciplines in 13 of the team's 14 matches this season. She missed the Jan. 15 match versus Kentucky due to injury. She recorded aggregate scores of 1160 or higher in 12 matches, including seven performances better than 1165. Fister shot a season-high 1170 at the Tiger Open in October. She posted a 1163 aggregate score at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier. At the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships in late February, Fister was named All-GARC second team in smallbore and honorable mention in combined.
Doran makes his first NCAA Championships appearance Friday. The junior had a career match at the Feb. 18 NCAA Sectional Qualifier, recording career-bests across the board in smallbore (586), air rifle (590) and aggregate (1176). He shattered his previous bests of 579 in smallbore (Jan. 21 at Withrow Invitational) and 1166 in aggregate (2015 NCAA Sectional Qualifier). Doran's 590 in air rifle edged his previous best in the discipline (589 at 2015 NCAA Sectional Qualifier).
The Ozark, Mo., native was Memphis' top aggregate finisher with his 1176 score (4th overall) at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier. He also posted the Tigers' top smallbore finish (4th; 586) and second-best air rifle performance (7th; 590).
Doran followed his solid NCAA Sectional Qualifier showing with the Tigers' top aggregate score (1168) at the GARC Championships Feb. 24-25. He posted the squad's top smallbore (582) and second-best air rifle (586) marks. He placed seventh in smallbore and, with that score, advanced to the conference finals in the discipline. Doran shot a 390 and finished sixth in the smallbore finals.
For the season, Doran recorded a 571.0 smallbore average in nine matches. He shot in both disciplines eight times and had a 1151.4 aggregate average.
