Chung's Big Second Round Pushes Tigers at Colleton River Collegiate

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Behind a first-place effort from senior Sydney Chung, the Memphis Tigers currently stand sixth at the Colleton River Collegiate, an event hosted at the Colleton River - Pete Dye Course by Michigan State University.
UAB leads the field after the first two rounds with a 590, while host Michigan State - which is ranked 29th - has a 592. Cincinnati (594), Rutgers (597), and UConn (600) all sit just ahead of Memphis with a 605 and Wisconsin (606). The third round opens on Tuesday, with the Tigers starting play on the first hole and will be teeing off with Rutgers and UConn.
Chung's 142 was one stroke better than the second-best score of 143 (-1) from Austin Squires of Cincinnati on the par-72, 7,169-yard course. UAB's R.J. Keur stands third in the field at even par, as just the aforementioned trio of golfers are below or at even par through two rounds in the tournament.
He opened the day on the fifth hole, and had bogeys on three of his first five holes, climbing to +3 heading into the back nine of the course. He followed with eight consecutive pars on holes 10 through 17, before a birdie on the 18th hole - and his 14th hole of the day - closed his score to an aggregate +2. He bogeyed his 15th hole, before closing the round with three straight pars to go into the clubhouse with a three-over 75.
Chung's second round opened ono the par-four fifth hole with a bogey, which he countered with a birdie a whole later on the 192-yard par three. Birdies on the eighth, 14th, and 16th holes dropped him to three strokes under par, before giving a stroke back on the 18th hole on the course and 14th hole of the day with a bogey.
Two holes after the bogey he dropped two strokes on a hole with an eagle on the par-five 548-yard second hole. He closed the round with his fifth birdie of the day on the par-four fourth hole, giving him a career-low round of 67.
Between his final 31 holes on the day, he shot five strokes under par with six birdies, and eagle, and just three bogeys.
JC Campbell was the second finisher for the Tigers, as his rounds of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5) have him tied for 26th in the field.
He started the tournament strong, opening with three pars and a pair of birdies to sit at two strokes under par through the first five holes of the day. A bogey on the par-four 10th hole - his sixth hole of the tournament - dropped him to one stroke under par. He followed with seven straight pars, before stubbing his toe late in the round with four bogeys in his final five holes, carding a three-over 75 on the round.
Campbell had a rough start to his second round - which began on the fifth hole - as he had a double bogey and three bogeys among his first six holes to push him to five strokes over par. He followed with back-to-back birdies on the par-four 15th hole and the par-five 16th holes; however, two more bogeys in the opening round sent him into the clubhouse with the 77.
Kevin Lee had a mixed result during his opening round, in which his nine-over 153 has him tied for 31st in the field. He stood five strokes over par through his first nine holes, before carding a birdie, par, and birdie on the next three holes. His up-and-down round saw two bogeys, a double bogey, a birdie and two pars over his final six holes, as he carded a first-round 78, six strokes over par.
His second round started similarly to his first, with three bogeys and three pars over the first six holes put him at three strokes over par; however, he quickly turned things back around with three straight pars which was followed by a birdie. A bogey on the course's 18th hole pushed him back to three strokes over par, before coming back and shooting a birdie on the course's first hole, a 345-yard par-four. He closed his day with four straight pars and a bogey, sending him into the clubhouse with a three-over 75.
Colin Dubnik was tied for third on the Tigers' squad after the first round when he shot a four-over 76. He opened strong with a birdie on his second hold; however, back-to-back bogeys on the course's 8th and 9th holes put him at a stroke over par. He proceeded to pepper in two bogeys among seven pars over holes 5-14 on the day for Dubnik, as he closed the round with two bogeys, a par, and a birdie to finish off his four-over 76.
The second round got a little crooked for the freshman from Rochester, New York, as he had seven holes of over-par golf through his first 13 holes that put him at 10 strokes over par, before closing strong over the final five holes with three pars, a bogey and a birdie.
Mikko Kauniskangas recorded two birdies in his opening round, to go with 10 pars, as his six-over 78 in the opening round was the fifth-best score for the Tigers. He followed with a 13-over 85 on the final 18 holes for a two-round total of 163 (+19) through 48 holes.
Playing as an individual, Chase Harris carded rounds of 76 and 78 to close the first two rounds tied for 37th in the field. Harris had a steady first round with a birdie, 12 pars, and five bogeys for a four-over 76.
His second round was much of the same with six bogeys and another dozen pars to close the round with a six-over 78, and his 154 for the two rounds.
