Georgia Southern scored five in the ninth to even the series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis allowed five runs in the ninth inning and lost 7-6 to Georgia Southern Saturday at FedExPark. The Tigers (6-3) will go for the series win over the Eagles (5-5) Sunday at 1 p.m.

Memphis held a 3-2 lead going to the ninth inning before Georgia Southern knocked in five runs, including a grand slam to go up 7-3. Reliever Jonathan Bowlan took the loss after loading the bases in the ninth.

Designated hitter Andy Bowman hit a two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to cut the deficit to one run but the Tigers couldn't complete the rally.

Georgia Southern took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning but the Tigers sophomore catcher Jason Santana knotted the game right back up with a two-run blast to left field in the bottom of the second. The home run was the first of his career. He finished the game 2-for-4 and he threw out two runners on the bases.

The Tigers took their first lead of the day on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nick Vaage drove in the go ahead run with a two-out single to right field that plated Brandon Grudzielanek.

Starting pitcher Drew Crosby went 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Blake Bennett pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings and Taylor Bobo worked a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.

Memphis had won five straight games before the loss Saturday. The Tigers will look to take the series over the Eagles and get a new winning streak started Sunday at 1 p.m.
