Gonzalez is first player under Mulrooney to sign professional contract
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former University of Memphis midfielder Raul Gonzalez has signed his first professional contract with the Richmond Kickers, a DC United affiliate, earlier this week. Gonzalez, a native of Ocean Springs, Miss., is the first player under the direction of head coach Richard Mulrooney to have signed a professional contract.
Â
"I'm very proud of Raul," said Mulrooney. "We both came to Memphis four years ago so I had the opportunity to work with him his entire Memphis career. To see him reach the next level is not only rewarding for him, but for the University of Memphis soccer program."
Â
Gonzalez spent the majority of the preseason with Minnesota United prior to signing his contract with the Kickers.
Â
"I am very excited," said Gonzalez. "I just kept thinking in my head that all I needed was an opportunity to show what I had in store. Whether good or bad happened, I knew that I left it all out on the field."
Â
Gonzalez was a four-year member of the men's soccer program. During his time at Memphis, he was a two-time All-American Athletic Conference honoree including a second-team pick this past fall. During his Memphis career, Gonzalez scored 13 goals to go along with 13 assists. He competed in 65 games for the Tigers which included 10 starts in 2016.
