Second-straight week a Tiger has been honored by the conference.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Jordan Wesner has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Wesner's first weekly conference honor of his career.
It is the second-consecutive week a Tigers track and field performance has been honored. Last week, Ashley Pryke was named the league's Female Field Athlete of the Week.
At the Mar. 24-25 Ole Miss/Joe Walker Invitational, Wesner won the men's high jump with a mark of 7-1 (2.16m). Wesner's jump was two inches higher than the runner-up's mark in the event. Last weekend's meet was the first for Wesner this outdoor season.
Wesner's 7-1 (2.16m) jump is tops in the American Athletic Conference and seventh-best nationally this outdoor season. His high jump mark is the best in the conference by five inches (second is 6-8/2.03m).
The Princeton, Wis., native narrowly missed tying his career-best jump of 7-1.5 (2.17m). He set his personal-best twice as a freshman in the 2016 outdoor campaign. Wesner jumped 7-1.5 and placed second at both the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and NCAA East Preliminaries. His second-place finish at the NCAA East Preliminaries earned him a spot in the NCAA Championships.
For his career, Wesner has jumped 7-0 (2.13m) or higher five times in eight outdoor meet appearances.
After finishing runner-up in the men's high jump at the 2016 American Athletic Conference indoor and outdoor championships, Wesner took the crown at this year's league indoor meet in late February. He won the league title with an indoor personal-best jump of 7-1.5 (2.17m).
The Tigers men's and women's track and field squads return to action this weekend, Mar. 31-Apr. 1 at the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Southeast Missouri is the host school for the meet.
