WACO, Texas – The No. 28 University of Memphis men's tennis team fell, 4-0, to Baylor Sunday, despite hanging tough with the fourth-ranked Bears, at Hurd Tennis Center.
The Tigers got off to solid start in doubles action with Felix Rauch and Ryan Peniston holding a 4-3 advantage on court two, while Andrew Watson and Kai Lemke were 4-all with the 29th-ranked tandem of Juan Benitez and Will Little at No. 1.
The Bears' pair of Constantin Frantzen and Max Tchoutakian, though, claimed their match on court three, meaning Baylor would only have to close out one more contest to earn the doubles point. BU did so at No. 2 as Johannes Schretter and Jimmy Bendeck topped Rauch and Peniston, 6-4, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, Schretter made it 2-0 with a win on court three followed by a victory for fifth-ranked Benitez at one.
Rauch battled to keep the match going for Memphis. He rallied on court six to force a tiebreaker in the second set, eventually falling, 7-4, to Frantzen, as Baylor sealed the victory.
The Tigers dropped to 12-5 on the season in the loss and 1-2 against ranked teams. Baylor, which entered the match with its highest national ranking of the year, improved to 17-3.
Memphis returns to American Athletic Conference play next weekend against SMU and Tulane at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The Tigers host the Mustangs Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by the Green Wave Sunday at noon.
