Women’s Tennis Picks Up 4-1 Win Over VCU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team defeated VCU, 4-1, for its second consecutive victory, at Middle Tennessee's Adams Tennis Complex Saturday.
The win for the Lady Tigers (10-5) is their seventh in the last eight matches. The loss for VCU (10-6) is its fourth straight.
"This was another great day for the Tigers," said Memphis head coach Hayden Perez. "We faced a very tough opponent in VCU. Their level forced us to play at a high level. This group is competing their best at the right time of the year. I am very proud of this group and where we are headed."
The Lady Tigers opened the day winning the doubles point for the second straight match. Anki Wind and Katherine Cao as well as Hanna Sohn and Marta Morga won on courts two and three, respectively, by identical 6-4 tallies for the early advantage.
Wind picked up the Tigers' only straight-set singles victory of the day, topping Janina Braun, 7-6, 7-5, on court one.
Gabrielle Paul also won at No. 3 singles. After a comfortable first set, She dropped the second, but rebounded for 6-3 triumph in the deciding final set to secure the point for Memphis.
The other singles win came from Katherine Cao on court five. She won the final two sets of her match with VCU's Gabriela Araujo, including cruising, 6-1, in the third set.
Memphis returns to action next Saturday, hosting North Texas at the Racquet Club of Memphis in a 10 a.m., start.
