Tigers will go for the sweep Sunday at FedExPark
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis took down Southern 5-3 to win the series over the Jaguars Saturday at FedExPark. The Tigers (15-7) will try to finish off the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Drew Crosby started and pitched six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. He gave up a two-run homer in the first inning but was then lights out for the next five innings. He allowed just three more base runners in his last five innings of work.
Southern designated hitter John Pope got the Jaguars started with that first-inning home run.
It took a while for the Memphis lineup to get going but things turned in the fourth inning when the Tigers got their first hit of the game and went on to score three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers started with three straight singles from Zach Schritenthal, Chris Carrier and Andy Bowman. Trent Turner knotted the game up with a sacrifice fly to score Carrier. A wild pitch allowed Bowman to scamper home for the go-ahead run.
The Tigers added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Bowman that scored Colton Neel to make the score 4-2.
Brandon Grudzielanek extended the lead to 5-2 with his second home run of the series, a solo shot to left-center in the sixth. Grudzielanek was the only Tiger with multiple-hits, finishing 3-for-4.
Hunter Smith pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief before Blake Bennett came on to pitch the eighth inning and faced a little trouble.
The Jaguar DH Pope was at it again in the eighth, hitting his second home run of the game to cut the Tigers' lead to 5-3. Southern then loaded the bases with two outs, forcing Memphis to turn to Colton Hathcock out of the pen to get the Tigers out of the jam.
Hathcock got a strikeout to end the eighth and then pitched a perfect ninth with two more strikeouts to record his eight save of the season.
