Tigers sophomore set the school record in the women's javelin.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Ashley Pryke has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Pryke's first weekly conference honor of her career.
At the Mar. 17-18 Rhodes Invitational, Pryke won the women's javelin with a school-record 175-3 (53.41m) throw. Pryke's javelin mark surpassed her previous school record by nearly 15 feet (160-10; 49.03m). Her previous school record was set in the 2016 outdoor season, which was her freshman campaign.
The javelin title was the second of her career. She also placed first in the women's javelin at the 2016 Joey Haines Invitational, where she set her first school record in the event.
Pryke, a Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, native, also qualified for the 2017 World University Games with her javelin result last Friday. The 2017 World University Games are scheduled for mid-to-late August in Taiwan.
The Tigers sophomore also competed in the women's shot put at last weekend's Rhodes Invitational. She placed fourth in the event (42-7; 12.98m).
In the 2016 outdoor season, Pryke placed third in the women's javelin at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. She also earned a berth in the javelin at the NCAA East Preliminaries, where she finished 14th overall.
The Tigers men's and women's track and field squads return to action this weekend, Mar. 24-25 at the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Miss. Ole Miss is the host school for the meet.
