Klatt Receives Conference's Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Alex Klatt, a member of the Tigers men's track and field team, has been selected to receive one of the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference's Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships, the league office announced Thursday. Each institutional winner receives a $2,000 scholarship.
Klatt holds a 3.61 grade-point average and is a computer science major. He graduates from the University of Memphis in May.
The Billings, Mont., native was named a United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Academic All-America in 2015-16. He is a two-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honoree (2014-15, 2015-16) and has also earned Memphis Athletics Tiger 3.0 Club recognition.
Klatt, who runs primarily in the 800 meters and 4x400 meter relay, is wrapping up his four-year career in in 2016-17. For his career, he has 11 total top-three finishes in the 800 meters (8 indoor/3 outdoor) and eight overall top-three performances in the 4x400 meter relay (3 indoor/5 outdoor).
His top time as a member of the Memphis 4x400 meter relay was a record-setting performance at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. The relay team finished runner-up in the event with a program-record time of 3:13.55. The previous 4x400 meter relay school record was 3:15.50 set in 1983.
In the 800 meters, Klatt's top time came at the indoor Music City Challenge in February of 2016, placing second with a time of 1:49.34.
Klatt's top outdoor performance was at the 2015 Auburn War Eagle Invitational. At that meet, he won the 800 meters (1:51.53) and also was a member of the first-place 4x400 meter relay (3:18.03). His best indoor campaign was in 2015-16 when he had four top-three finishes in the 800 meters, in addition to being a part of the record-setting 4x400 meter relay.
The Memphis track and field squads wrapped up their indoor seasons last weekend at the American Athletic Conference Championships. The outdoor season starts Mar. 18 at the Rhodes College Invitational.
