Women’s Tennis Gets Conference Road Win Saturday
Mar 18, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Lady Tigers win fifth straight match and get first conference victory.
HOUSTON –The University of Memphis women's tennis team (8-4, 1-0 American) extended its winning streak to five straight with a 4-2 conference road win at Houston (8-8, 1-2 American), Saturday.
Houston, with just six players on its 2017 roster, had just five healthy for the conference match-up with the Tigers, so Memphis just needed a 6-3 win at one doubles to take the 1-0 lead in the match. That was quickly 2-0 with Josephine Cao receiving the forfeit at six singles.
Hanna Sohn then made it 3-0 Tigers with a 6-1, 6-3 win at two singles.
But Houston fought back. A 6-3, 6-4 win at three singles gave the Cougars their first point of the match and Sveva Mazzari came back from a 6-1 first set loss to Anki Wind to win the second and third sets, 6-1, 6-3 to make it 3-2.
But Katherine Cao extended her team-best winning streak to six matches with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win at five to seal the road victory.
Memphis will remain in Houston and will face #38 ranked Rice, Sunday, at 11 a.m.
