Women’s Tennis Wins Second Straight

Tigers move to 5-4 on the year.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (5-4) won its second straight match at home on Sunday morning, downing visiting Southern Illinois (4-6), 6-1, in non-conference play at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
Memphis started with wins at two and three doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. Since the ones were close to completion, they also finished that match and the Tigers added a third win there as well.
Freshman Katherine Cao then extended her team-best winning streak to three matches with a 6-0, 6-2 win at five singles. Senior Marta Morga followed just minutes later with a 6-1, 6-0 win at four singles for a 3-0 Memphis lead.
Senior Gabrielle Paul then secured the Memphis win with a 6-3, 6-2 win at three singles to help Memphis move to 5-4 on the year.
The two teams played out the remaining matches. SIU got on the board with a win at six singles before Anki Wind picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at two singles for a 5-1 score. Junior Hanna Sohn came back from a first set tie break loss to win the second set, 6-1, then won a super tiebreak 10-6 for the final 6-1 Tiger victory.
Memphis closes this four-match home stand with a doubleheader on Wednesday. Memphis will host Lamar at 9 a.m., then will face Missouri State at 3 p.m. (or after the noon men's match wraps up).
