Midfield duo to represent their country this month
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following their outstanding freshmen seasons at Memphis, midfielders Serena Dolan and Jessica Lisi have been called into Canada Soccer Women's National U18-20 EXCEL Identification Camp. The five-day camp will be held from Feb. 9-13 in Burnaby, British Columbia.
"We recently had two players called into the full national team and now to have these two freshmen get called into the U-20 team is great for our program," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "This has become the standard for our program and with the players we have coming in and the continuing recruitment of Canada I think we will continue to see this."
The camp is designed to provide further evaluation for the 2018 U18-20 National EXCEL Program. Following this initial identification camp, selections into the Canadian National U18-20 Program will commence for 2017, with the first camp taking place in March.
Dolan and Lisi were both recognized on the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie team after the midfield duo started every game and helped lead the Tigers to a bid in the NCAA Tournament. The pair were two of the six Memphis players to start every game in 2016.
"As I always say, it is an honor to represent your country. It is great not only for these players but for our program and this university. This is very well deserved. They both played a significant role in our last season," said Monaghan.
Dolan scored four goals and had five assists, totaling 13 points in her freshman campaign. Her 1,769 minutes played were the third-most on the team and second among the Tigers' field players. The Kentville, Nova Scotia product, started her career with a bang, scoring the game-winning goal in the season-opener against Southeastern Louisiana.
Lisi received second-team American Athletic Conference honors, in addition to her All-Rookie recognition. She led Memphis with nine assists and knocked in six goals to total 21 points, second only to senior Valerie Sanderson last year. The Woodbridge, Ontario native had three multiple-assist games and scored her first career game-winning goal on the road at Temple.
