Memphis forward to compete in major women’s international competition
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis junior forward Marie Levasseur has been called up to Canada Soccer's Women's National Team to compete in next month's Algarve Cup. The tournament hosted in Portugal since 1994 is one of the most prestigious and longest-running women's international football events.
Canada will be playing to defend its 2016 title with a squad blending experience and youth. The 24th edition of the invitational Algarve Cup will take place from March 1-8. Canada faces Denmark on March 1, Russia on March 3, and hosts Portugal on March 6, with the final match scheduled for March 8.
Canada won the 2016 edition of the Algarve Cup, its first appearance at the tournament since 2003, with a 2-1 victory over Brazil in the final match of the women's international competition. Canada reached the final after winning Group A with six points.
Levasseur is one of three NCAA Division I college players on the 22-player roster, joining UCLA's Jessie Fleming and Duke's Rebecca Quinn. This is her second call up this year, after joining the national team for the first training camp of 2017 in January.
The Stoneham, Quebec City native has represented her country a number of times since joining the University of Memphis, playing in the 2015 Pan American games, earning her first call-up to the full national team later in 2015, and playing with the U-20 team twice in 2016.
Heading into her junior season in 2017, Levasseur has 11 career goals and nine assists. She was a first team all-conference player in 2016 and the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2015.
