Two NCAA individual berths tie a program record.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Memphis' Makennon Doran and Amy Fister both were selected to shoot at the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championships Mar. 10-11 in Columbus, Ohio, the national collegiate organization announced Wednesday. Ohio State University is hosting the national event.
Doran and Fister will compete in smallbore at the NCAA Championships. It is Fister's fourth-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance. The senior was a member of the 2014 squad that placed fourth in the nation and then competed in smallbore in 2015 and 2016. Doran is shooting in his first NCAA Championships event.
Aside from the 2005 and 2014 team appearances, the two individual performers chosen for this postseason are tied for the most at a single NCAA Championships in program history. The Tigers also sent two individual shooters to the NCAA Championships in 2004 and 2011.
Fister's NCAA selection is her third-straight in smallbore. She shot a 577 (20th) in smallbore in 2015 and a 570 (42nd) at last year's championships. This season, Fister posted a 580.8 average in smallbore and shot over 580 in eight of her 12 appearances in the discipline, including a season-best 585 twice in consecutive matches at both the Ole Miss Open and Tiger Open. She shot a 582 and placed seventh in smallbore at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier.
The Kutztown, Pa., native continued her career improvement in smallbore in 2016-17. She raised her smallbore average (580.8) by over a point from last season (579.6) and over five points from her sophomore average (575.1).
Fister competed in both disciplines in 12 of the team's 13 matches this season. She missed the Jan. 15 match versus Kentucky due to injury. She recorded aggregate scores of 1160 or higher in all 12 matches, including seven performances better than 1165. Fister shot a season-high 1170 at the Tiger Open in early October. She posted a 1163 aggregate at last weekend's NCAA Sectional Qualifier.
Doran will make his first NCAA Championships in March. The junior had a career match at last weekend's NCAA Sectional Qualifier, recording career-bests across the board in smallbore (586), air rifle (590) and aggregate (1176). He shattered his previous bests of 579 in smallbore (Jan. 21 at Withrow Invitational) and 1166 in aggregate (2015 NCAA Sectional Qualifier). Doran's 590 in air rifle edged his previous best in the discipline (589 at 2015 NCAA Sectional Qualifier).
The Ozark, Mo., native was Memphis' top aggregate finisher with his 1176 score (4th overall) at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier. He also posted the Tigers' top smallbore finish (4th; 586) and second-best air rifle performance (7th; 590) last weekend.
For the season, Doran recorded a 569.6 smallbore average in eight matches. He shot in both disciplines seven times in 2016-17 and had a 1149.0 average.
Before heading to the NCAA Championships, the Tigers go on the road to Akron, Ohio, to shoot in the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships Friday-Saturday, Feb. 24-25.
