Tigers come back from 3-0 down to tie it at 3-all.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (3-3) came back from 3-0 down to tie the non-conference match at Minnesota (4-3) at 3-all, but could not complete the upset on the road, Sunday, falling 4-3.
"For the second consecutive day, we came out a little flat at the start of the match," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "I wasn't happy with our energy and shared that with the girls and they responded in a great way and fought extremely hard in singles. I am very proud of their singles efforts, we found ourselves in some very intense and competitive situations and I liked the way we competed. We suffered a tough loss today, but I hope we learn from this experience and it makes us tough in the future."
Minnesota took the early lead with a 6-0 win at one doubles and a 6-3 win at three. The Gophers then stretched the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at four and a 6-4, 6-3 at six singles.
Hanna Sohn then helped swing the momentum the Tigers' way with a 6-3, 6-1 win at two singles. While she was closing up her match, Anki Wind had grabbed her opening set, 6-2, but was tangled up with Caroline Ryba, who won the second set to force a third set. While that was happening at one, senior Marta Morga was in a dogfight of her own. She had won her opening set, 6-3, and was one of two Tigers who found themselves in second set tiebreaks. Morga won her second set breaker, 10-6, to pull Memphis to 3-2 down, and freshman Katherine Cao tied the match at 3-all with a 10-5 win in her second set.
That put all eyes on court one, where Wind was trying to pull off the comeback. But with a vocal home crowd on her side, Caroline Ryba rallied from her first set loss to close the door on the Tiger comeback with a 6-4 win in the third.
Memphis will wrap up the five-match road swing at No. 18 ranked Ole Miss, Saturday, at 1 p.m. The Tigers return home for their first match in over a month on Mar. 3rd when they host Jackson State.
