Tigers to face Missouri and Minnesota in non-conference matches over the weekend.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (3-1) is in Minnesota this weekend for a pair of matches, including a Saturday morning match against Missouri (5-2) and a Sunday morning match against host Minnesota (3-2).
About Memphis (3-1)
Memphis won its first three matches of the spring dual season, then fell on the road at an LSU team that had just fallen out of the national rankings and is still receiving votes, 5-0. Memphis is playing the third and fourth matches of a five-match road swing this weekend in Minnesota as the Tigers' home facility, The Racquet Club of Memphis, is hosting the ATP 250 level Memphis Open this week. Memphis will play one more road match, at Ole Miss, Feb. 25th, before returning home for four home matches in March.
Junior Anki Wind continues to lead Memphis in singles wins with 13 and is 2-2 atop the Memphis singles linup. Freshman Katherine Cao has added 11 singles wins, including a 3-0 mark at five singles, while Hanna Sohn, who missed the match at LSU, has 10 wins on the year, including a 2-1 mark at two singles.
In doubles, the team of Sohn and Josephine Cao are 3-0 at two singles and are sporting a seven match win streak dating back to fall play. The duo missed last weekend with Sohn's absence, and Cao teamed with fellow freshman Clara Kuehn at two singles in the loss at LSU. Seniors Marta Morga and Gabrielle Paul are 3-1 at three doubles and had a four-match win streak snapped at LSU and will be looking to get back on track this weekend, starting with the neutral site match against Missouri.
About Missouri (5-2)
Missouri is 5-2 and is at the tail end of a 10-match road trip. That set of Tigers will face host Minnesota on Friday night before facing Memphis Saturday morning at 10 a.m. They will close the trip with a 6 p.m. match against South Dakota.
In their last match, a 5-2 loss to Wichita State, Mizzou claimed the doubles point with wins at two and three. Seniors Cassidy Spearman and Bea Machado Santos won all three doubles matches at two last weekend, all three sealing the doubles point for the Tigers.
In singles play, Wichita State came back with wins at one, two, four, five and six singles to secure the win.
Memphis is somewhat familiar with their Tiger counterparts from Missouri, having competed in Mizzou's fall tournament earlier this year. Both teams were 5-5 in the 10 matches against one another in that event.
This is the seventh meeting between Missouri and Memphis and the Mizzou version of the Tigers leads the overall series, 4-2, including two straight matches. The last meeting was in 2010, a 4-1 Missouri win in Columbia. Memphis won the last neutral site match against Missouri, 5-4, back in 1981.
About Minnesota (3-2)
Minnesota is 3-1 at home, but suffered their first home loss on Feb. 4th, 4-3, to Dartmouth. They bounced back with a 5-2 loss the following day to improve to 3-2 on the year.
