Future Tiger also was the conference Player of the Year.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Kelsea Bivins, an early signee for the Tigers volleyball program last November, has been named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American.
Bivins was honored as a 2016 NJCAA All-America second team selection. She continued the Wallace State streak of having at least one volleyball player recognized as a NJCAA All-American since 2009.
Bivins is one of eight signees for the University of Memphis volleyball program. The other seven newcomers for the 2017 fall campaign are: Tia Gleason, Hannah Flowers, Kate Hoerdemann, Alyssa Kronberg, Daija Lowe, Adjuwa Osborne and Joze Smith.
Bivins starred the last two seasons at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala. This past campaign, the 5-foot-11 outside/right-side hitter led the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) with 442 kills and also averaged a conference-best 3.68 kills per set. Bivins was second in the league with a .400 hitting percentage and added 84 blocks and 70 digs.
The Pelham, Ala., native registered 10 or more kills in 28 matches in 2016, including racking up a career-high 21 kills against Southern Union Oct. 2. For her efforts, Bivins was named the 2016 ACCC Player of the Year. She also was named to the ACCC All-Tournament Team and earned ACCC Player of the Week recognition four times last season.
In 2016, Bivins helped lead the Lions to a 38-4 overall record and its eighth-consecutive ACCC championship. Wallace State also made its eighth-straight NJCAA national tournament appearance.
Bivins finished her junior college career as a member of the Lions' two-year class that posted a 77-12 record and two league championships. Wallace State was a perfect 29-0 in ACCC play the past two seasons.
As a freshman, Bivins was an All-ACCC second team selection after compiling 434 kills and 234 digs in 2015. She played in 42 matches her initial collegiate campaign.
Prior to junior college, Bivins played at Thompson High School in Alabaster, Ala. Following her final prep season, she was named to al.com's All-State and Birmingham All-Metro teams. Bivins also played club volleyball for Southern Performance.Â
