Women's Basketball To Host East Carolina In Midweek Game

This is the first and only meeting this season against East Carolina
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With wins in four of its last five games, the University of Memphis women's basketball team looks to extend its home winning streak to four by hosting East Carolina Wednesday evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Tip-off against the Pirates is slated for 7 p.m.

In the last five games, the Tigers have signature victories over No. 20 USF and Tulane along with wins over Houston and UCF. The win at Tulane last Thursday night was the first victory in New Orleans since 2008 and the win over No. 20 USF evened the season series at 1-1 against the Bulls. Memphis is the only non-UConn American opponent to have defeated USF this season.

The victory at Tulane was the third come from behind victory this season for the Tigers with the other two coming against Houston on January 25 and UCF on January 28. Memphis ultimately turned a seven-point halftime deficit into an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter. Taylor Williams proceeded to knock down a big three-pointer with 25 seconds to play to put the game all but out of reach for the Green Wave.

With 13 second half points and 15 total to lead Memphis, Williams was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll this past week. This is the second time this season Williams has been recognized by the conference.

Cheyenne Creighton continues to lead the Tigers with 14.4 points per game after contributing 11 in the win over Tulane. She has recorded six double-doubles this season to lead Memphis and is also the team's leading rebounder with 7.4 boards per contest.

Brea Elmore leads the team in conference play with 14.0 points per game. Elmore also added 11 with four steals and four rebounds against Tulane.

Memphis is currently in a tie for sixth overall in the American Athletic Conference standings with UCF, a team that the Tigers have defeated twice this season. Upcoming games against Cincinnati, SMU, and Tulane are key for Memphis to move up in the conference standings.

East Carolina comes to Memphis with a 10-15 overall record and 1-11 mark in the American Athletic Conference. The Pirates have lost nine-straight games dating back to January 11 against Temple. East Carolina's lone victory in conference play came at home against SMU on January 7.

Kristen Gaffney leads the Pirates offensively with 15.1 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounding (6.6), minutes per game (32.2) and field goal percentage (.502). Bre McDonald has also been a threat for East Carolina this season as she averages 11.9 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per contest. McDonald has had six double-doubles for East Carolina.

Heather Macy is the head coach of the Pirates who is currently in her seventh season at the helm. East Carolina is currently 11th in the standings after being selected to finish sixth in the league ahead of Memphis.
