Women's cross country picks up team academic recognition for sixth-straight year.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – It's been over two months since the end of the 2016 cross country campaign, and the University of Memphis women's team continues to make history.
On Monday, the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its team and individual academic honors, and for the first time in Tigers women's cross country program history, two runners earned All-Academic honors from the organization. Senior Martina Rodriguez Sala and junior Chelsea Ladd were the Tigers' honorees.
Rodriguez Sala and Ladd were two of eight runners from the American Athletic Conference to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. Memphis and SMU were the only two schools from The American to place more than one student-athlete on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. Overall, 160 women's cross country student-athletes from across the nation were named USTFCCCA All-Academic.
Memphis women's cross country received USTFCCCA All-Academic team recognition with its 3.56 grade-point average (GPA). The Tigers had the second-highest GPA of all 11 American Athletic Conference programs on the list. Only Cincinnati had a higher GPA (3.68).
It is the sixth-consecutive year Memphis women's cross country received USTFCCCA All-Academic team distinction (2011-16). Prior to the 2016 season, the Tigers women's cross country program earned one of Memphis' five American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards.
The team and individual academic honors from the USTFCCCA is a continuation of a "season-to-remember" in Memphis women's cross country history. The following lists a few of team's history-making moments in the fall of 2016:
