Fister leads the way in final home match of her career.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis' Amy Fister posted the team's top smallbore and air rifle scores, but it wasn't enough in the Tigers rifle squad's setback to Ole Miss.
The match was Memphis' second at its new on-campus home, the Memphis Rifle Facility in South Hall.
The Tigers, ranked No. 11 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, were unable to find a rhythm in the match against their Mid-South and Great American Conference (GARC) rival Ole Miss. The No. 13 Rebels won 4640-4615 and also swept both disciplines. Ole Miss out-shot Memphis 2297-2279 in smallbore and 2343-2336 in air rifle.
The Tigers' 4615 aggregate was the team's second-lowest of the season. Memphis shot a season-low 4607 in a setback to Kentucky Jan. 15. The loss was the first to Ole Miss in 2016-17. The Tigers placed ahead of the Rebels at the season-opening Ole Miss Open Sept. 21-Oct. 9 and the team's own Tiger Open Sept. 24-Oct. 4.
In the final home match of her career, Fister placed third in smallbore (575) and fourth in air rifle (586). The senior posted a 1161 aggregate score and placed fourth.
Freshman Levi Clark was Memphis' second-best shooter in smallbore with a 574, and sophomore Leighton Dempster followed Fister in air rifle with a fifth-place performance (586). Clark was sixth in air rifle (582) and also placed just behind Fister in aggregate score at 1156 (5th).
Freshman Amberlie Ezell continued her solid shooting in 2017. She placed in the top-10 in both smallbore (567) and air rifle (582), marking the first time she had top-10 performances in both disciplines in the same match this campaign. Ezell also was eighth in aggregate (1149). Since the start of the 2017 portion of the schedule, Ezell has posted season-bests in air rifle (589; Jan. 15 vs. Kentucky), smallbore (577; Jan. 21 at Withrow Invitational) and aggregate (1159; Jan. 21 at Withrow Invitational).
Memphis' focus now shifts to the postseason, first with the NCAA Sectional Qualifier Feb. 18 at Murray, Ky. The following weekend (Feb. 24-26), the Tigers travel to Akron, Ohio, for the GARC Championships.
