Dec 09, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Creighton records fifth double-double this year with 17 points and 14 rebounds
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Seventeen points a piece by Taylor Barnes and Cheyenne Creighton along with a career-high 14 rebounds by Creighton pushed the University of Memphis women's basketball team to a 64-62 victory over former Conference USA rival UAB Saturday evening. The win improves the Tigers to 2-8 on the year while dropping UAB to 7-2 overall.
Â
How It Happened
UAB put the first points on the board with a three-pointer by Deanna Kuzmanic before the Tigers scored on back-to-back possessions. The Blazers saw its first quarter lead grow to as many as four before Memphis rallied back to make it a one-point game at the first break.
Â
Through the first six minutes of the second quarter, Memphis started to shift the momentum in its favor. A 10-0 run capped by a Damonique Miller lay-up gave the Tigers a six-point lead, their largest of the game. UAB had an answer, however, for the Memphis run and going into the intermission the Tigers held on a one-point edge.
Â
Five made three-pointers Memphis in the third quarter catapulted Memphis to an 11-point lead with 2:15 on the clock. Jada Stinson and Barnes each hit two three's while Cheyenne Creighton added the fifth. The hot shooting from beyond the arc saw Memphis go into the fourth quarter with a five-point lead.
Â
Memphis' lead grew to as many as 10 in the fourth, but UAB continued to fight its way back into the contest. UAB scored 13 points in the final 2:08, but the Tigers held on for the victory.
Â
Turning Point
Memphis drained five three-pointers in the third quarter to build an 11-point lead. The Tigers also held on to the ball, only committing three turnovers in the second half.

Notables
Melissa McFerrin Quotable
It was a classic UAB-Memphis game. I thought Taylor Barnes came out really aggressive. I thought Jada Stinson really gave us some great minutes today, great minutes defensively. She hit a couple of threes on in-bounds plays and Cheyenne Creighton really came through great tonight.
Â
Next Up For The Tigers
The Tigers are off for the next week before heading to Vanderbilt on Dec. 16. Tipoff against the Commodores is slated for 6 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
