Tigers Track And Field Sets Two Indoor Records Saturday

Chavez, men's 4x400 relay win in record-setting fashion.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Memphis sprinter Cera Chavez and the men's 4x400 meter relay posted big performances in pacing the Tigers track and field effort at the Vanderbilt Opener Saturday. The meet was Memphis' opener for the 2017-18 indoor campaign.
Chavez, a sophomore, won the women's 60 meters and also ran a leg on the women's 4x400 meter relay. The Tigers women placed second in the relay.
Chavez and the men's 4x400 meter relay set school indoor records. Chavez ran a 7.39 in the women's 60 meters to win the event in a school-record time. The Tigers' 4x400 meter relay finished first in a program-record time of 3:13.19.
Overall, Memphis won five total events (men/women combined) and had 18 top-three performances (men/women combined) Saturday.

Tigers Tidbits/Vanderbilt Opener Notes
- Cera Chavez set the school record in the women's 60 meters, breaking the previous mark of 7.50 set by Lashundra Kershaw in 2010. It was Chavez's second school record of her career, as she set the outdoor 200 meters mark (23.32) last spring.
- Chavez's 7.39 in the women's 60 meters also was a Vanderbilt Opener meet record.
- Chavez's 7.39 bettered her previous-best in the event. She ran a 7.68 at last year's Vanderbilt Opener.
- Ryan Champlin, Jarred Pasley, Sir Newton Lee and Antuan Andrews were members of the record-setting men's 4x400 meter relay. The quartet won the event in a time of 3:13.19. The previous record was 3:13.55 set at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships. Andrews also was a member of the 2016 relay team.
- Chavez ran a leg in helping the Tigers' 4x400 meter relay to a second-place finish (3:50.54). Chavez was joined on the relay by Loushayna Nemour, Paris Perkins and Hailey Williams.
- Sophomore Noah Agnew posted an indoor personal-best of 6-8.75 (2.05m) in the men's high jump.
- Junior Saida Burns-Moore set an indoor personal-best in the women's triple jump with a 40-4.25 (12.30m) mark. She shattered her previous-best indoor jump by over three feet.
- Junior Nicole Lawson also set an indoor personal-best in the women's triple jump with a 39-6 (12.04m) effort. She surpassed her previous-best by over six inches.
- DeeNia McMiller set personal-bests in her two events Saturday. McMiller's marks were 47-3.25 (14.40m) in the shot put and 61-2.25 (18.64m) in the weight throw. She placed second in both events.
- Hailey Williams (58.99) and Jasmine Taylor (59.95) both set indoor personal-bests in the women's 400 meters.
- Senior ToNaya Gulley placed third in the women's 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.69.
