Johnson Rookie of the Week, Martin weekly honor roll.
PROVIDENCE, R.I ā University of Memphis freshman guard Jamal Johnson and junior guard Jeremiah Martin have earned weekly American Athletic Conference honors, the league office announced Monday.
Johnson was named AAC Rookie of the Week for his performances against Samford and Bryant University. Johnson had a game-winning three-point play in the closing seconds to defeat Samford Tuesday and followed with an 18-point effort in his first start, a 90-72 victory Saturday over Bryant in the Houzz Gotham Classic.
Johnson rescued the Tigers against Samford. Memphis trailed by four with 18 seconds to go, but got a layup from Martin to trim the deficit to 64-62. The Tigers forced a steal on the ensuing inbounds pass and with 2.5 seconds to go Johnson followed a Jimario Rivers' miss in the paint and was fouled. He sank the free throw for the win.
Against Bryant, Johnson scored all of his points from beyond the arc, including an improbable, falling-out-of-bounds heave as the first-half buzzer sounded. The shot banked in to give Memphis a 38-22 halftime advantage. Johnson, a Birmingham, Ala., native, averaged 12 points in the two games and was 7-of-14 from 3-point range.
Martin averaged 19 points in the two Tigers' wins, including a game-high 24 points against Bryant. Martin also had seven assists, two blocks and two steals in the win over Bryant and was 9-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-7 from long range.
Memphis (6-2) resumes play in the Gotham Classic Tuesday night at home against Albany (10-1). The Tigers are 6-0 at FedExForum.
