Four Starters Score Double Digits in Women's Basketball Win
Nov 04, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Creighton finishes with 21 points and nine boards in exhibition game.
MEMPHIS – Four starters posted double-digit points in an 83-50 exhibition win over cross-town foe Christian Brothers, Saturday, at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Senior Cheyenne Creighton finished with 21 points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes in the victory, including a 9-for-9 stint from the free-throw line.
"On the offensive end, I wanted to see our system and I thought we got to see that," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "We had to make some adjustments playing against their Princeton offense, which I was excited to see. I thought our shot selection was good, we just need to find (Brea Elmore) and Cheyenne a bit more than we did."
Memphis jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead before Makayla Enochs got Christian Brothers on the scoreboard. An Enochs layup with 2:38 left in the opening quarter cut the Tiger lead to 10 at 18-8, and a pair of Kelsey Adkins free throws again trimmed it to 10 at 20-10, but Jada Stinson had an answer both times, hitting a pair of jumpers to put Memphis up 22-10 at the end of the first.
Memphis opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets from Cheyenne Creigton and a three from Alyssa Dean, one of her three triples in the game, pushed the Memphis lead to 19 with 7:58 to play in the quarter. But the Tigers hit a scoring drought, going over the last five minutes of the quarter without a field goal, but still led at the break, 37-24.
The Tigers came out to start the second half with a 7-0 run, as two of Creighton's eight free-throws pushed Memphis up 51-29 mid-way through the third quarter. Brea Elmore then scored five straight around a Kelsey Adkins three, to push the lead to 56-32 with 3:58 to play in the third. Elmore finished with 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the win.
The Tigers got on the glass and held CBU to just 10 third quarter points, pushing their lead to 61-34 at the end of the stanza.
CBU battled back in the fourth, going 9-for-13 from the field, but the Tigers closed out the victory by forcing seven fourth quarter turnovers.
Dean finished with 17 points and four rebounds in the win, while Elmore finished with 12 points. Taylor Barnes rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting with a team-best seven assists.
Kelsey Adkins led CBU with 20 points off the bench on 7-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range.
"We put 83 points on the board and kept them to 50, but it doesn't mean anything other than we got a few reps and we've got a little teaching video," McFerrin said. "Overall I was pleased, but we have a lot to clean up."
The Tigers will open their regular season, Friday, November 10 at 7 p.m. against Tennessee State. Season tickets for Memphis women's basketball are on sale now through the University of Memphis Ticket Office at 901-678-2331 or online at www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
