Nov 27, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Senior forward averaged 17.5 points in last week's two wins.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. ā University of Memphis men's basketball senior Jimario Rivers has been named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday.
It is Rivers' first conference weekly accolade. It also is the first time a Tigers player has been honored this season.
Last week, Rivers helped lead Memphis to a 2-0 record with home victories over New Orleans 63-52 and Northern Kentucky 76-74. Both teams were 2017 NCAA Tournament participants.
In the two games, Rivers averaged 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 73.7 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the free throw line. He also had four assists, two blocked shots and one steal. Rivers averaged 36.5 minutes played last week.
The Clarksville, Tenn., native scored a career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws in the Nov. 21 win over New Orleans. His eight field goals made also were a career-best. Rivers also dished out three assists and added two blocks versus the Privateers.
The 6-foot-8 forward followed that performance with 17 points and seven boards in a come-from-behind win over Northern Kentucky. The Tigers trailed the Norse by 16 points in the first half (29-13). Rivers shot 6-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. He hit two free throws late to help seal the victory.
Memphis (3-1) returns to action Thursday, Nov. 30 when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face longtime rival UAB (4-3) in the Bartow Classic. The game honors the memory of legendary coach Gene Bartow, who coached at both Memphis and UAB and led the Tigers to the 1973 NCAA title match-up with UCLA. Thursday's game time is 7 p.m. (CT) at Bartow Arena.
