Women’s Basketball Drops Second Round Game To #21 DePaul
Nov 24, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Cheyenne Creighton records eighth career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – An early run by the #21 DePaul Blue Demons in the first quarter proved to be too much for the University of Memphis women's basketball team to overcome as the Tigers fell by a score of 81-67 Friday afternoon at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
Three Tigers scored in double-digits, led by Cheyenne Creighton's 22 points. Creighton finished with her eighth career double-double by adding 10 rebounds.
How It Happened
Memphis jumped out with an early 7-2 lead behind a Brea Elmore three-pointer a pair of baskets by Cheyenne Creighton and Jasmine James. DePaul, however, had an answer and promptly rattled off a 13-0 run to take a 15-2 lead over Memphis.
The Tigers continued to battle through the end of the first half, but never cut the DePaul lead to any less than seven with 1:37 left in the first quarter.
Down as many as 21 with 6:44 remaining before halftime, the Tigers opened up the third quarter on a 14-9 run to come within nine of the Blue Demons. DePaul had an answer to the Memphis run and built up their lead to double-digits for the remainder of the contest.
Turning Point
DePaul went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter and Memphis was never able to come any closer than seven for the remainder of the contest.
Notables
Melissa McFerrin Quotable
Our team fought and they showed more guts than they have shown all year. This is a very good DePaul team. I'm disappointed that we lost as I thought there were times in the first quarter and maybe even the third where turnovers got us. If we could have controlled those, we might have had a chance. Our kids fought and they made adjustments.
Next Up For The Tigers
Memphis will now take on the loser of the Kent State/Gonzaga game that is to be played immediately following the conclusion of the Memphis/DePaul game. The game slated for 12:30 PM PT/2:30 PM CT can be heard on the airwaves at 91.7 FM WUMR and a link to view the contest is available at www.gotigersgo.com.
