#9/8 Ohio State Tops Memphis in Opening Round of Play4Kay Showcase

Davis, Elmore lead Memphis with 16 points at the Mandalay Bay Events Center
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest to No. 9/8 Ohio State Thanksgiving afternoon by a score of 100-69. The Tigers will now take on DePaul in the next round Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT/12:30 p.m. PT at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Â

How It Happened
The Buckeyes jumped out early against the Tigers with five quick points from Stephanie Mavunga. A Breigha Wilder-Cochran lay-up was the first Memphis basket of the game. Ohio State continued to use its explosive offense to build a lead on Tigers, one that grew as many as 20 in the first quarter. Alana Davis helped inside for the Tigers with a quick four points off the bench.

The Tigers, however, continued to battle into the second quarter. Brea Elmore came up with six, second quarter points to lead Memphis. In all, the Tigers matched their first quarter total with 17 and held Ohio State to just 21.

Right out of the intermission, Memphis scored four quick points by Elmore and Cheyenne Creighton. OSU had an answer, and forced Memphis into a scoring drought until Creighton responded with less than five minutes left in the third.

Memphis continued to battle tough and outscored Ohio State in the fourth quarter, 20-14, led by six points by Creighton. Three Tigers finished the game in double-digits in Creighton, Davis, and Elmore.
