Miller Earns Spot on Weekly Honor Roll
MEMPHIS – Senior quarterback Riley Ferguson set career bests for completions, attempts, yards and touchdown passes in a 70-31 conference road win at UConn and was named the American's Offensive Player of the Week for his second 400-plus yard career game, Monday.
Ferguson, who had now passed for 48 career touchdowns in just 18 games at Memphis, tied the school and American record with seven touchdown passes in the win at UConn, Friday. This is the fifth time in his two-year Tiger career, and the second this season, that he has earned the league's offensive weekly award.
A transfer from Coffeyville CC, Ferguson currently ranks fourth in career passing yards, with 5,233, heading in to a Saturday matchup against #24/25 ranked Navy. His 48 career touchdown passes currently ranks third, behind Danny Wimprine (81) and Paxton Lynch (59). With his third touchdown pass in the win at UConn, Ferguson passed former Tiger Martin Hankins' two-year mark of 43 passes to move to third in the record book.
Ferguson completed touchdown passes to four different players in the win at UConn, including a school-record four touchdown catches from senior wide receiver Anthony Miller. Miller earned his second weekly honor roll appearance for his 15-catch, 224-yard effort at UConn. The 15 catches tied his own school record from last season and he remains the only receiver in Memphis history with a 200-plus-yard receiving game. He had the first 200-plus yard receiving game in school history last year with a 250-yard effort in a loss to Tulsa.
Heading in to the matchup against #24/25 Navy, Miller now has 177 career catches for 2,644 yards. He passed Carlos Singleton to move to second all-time in career catches and is now 35 catches shy of tying Duke Calhoun's four-year receptions mark of 212. He needs 337 yards to tie Calhoun's all-time receiving yards mark. Calhoun finished his four-year Memphis career with 2,981 yards. Miller, who redshirt his freshman season, then missed his redshirt freshman year due to an injury, will have played one less season than Calhoun if he can catch the career yardage mark.
Memphis will host a nationally-ranked opponent in the Liberty Bowl for the second time in three games when Navy rolls in to town Saturday for a 2:45 pm (CT) game that will be televised on ESPNU. Navy is 5-0 and has won both previous meetings against the Tigers, including a 45-20 win in Memphis in 2015. Last year, the Midshipmen prevailed, 42-28 over the Tigers.
