Tigers tie up contest late in the first half
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers pushed USF to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at the Billy J. Murphy Track & Soccer Complex in an American Athletic Conference match-up. The tie moves Memphis to 3-7-4 on the year and 1-2-2 in AAC play.
Â
"We started off slow, but after a tactical change during the first half we responded well," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "This was a chess match, back-and-forth. We've been in those before. For both teams to get a point out of this is probably a fair result."
Â
USF took the early lead on the Tigers in the 8th minute of the contest.
Â
After collecting themselves, Memphis increased momentum and pressure in the first half. That pressure paid off in the 40th minute of the match with a goal by Charles Blankenship. Blankenship's second goal this season was a sliding shot from the left side after receiving a cross by Burke Fahling. Fahling now has a team-high five assists this season.
Â
The high intensity match continued, but neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the contest.
Â
Memphis finished with 17 shots compared to 18 by USF. The Bulls had nine corner kicks while the Tigers had four. Goalkeeper Jake Leeker finished with eight saves in 110 minutes played.
Â
The Tigers now hit the road next Saturday to UConn for their final regular season road match of the 2017 season. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer.
