Women’s Tennis Runs End at ITA Regional

Josephine Cao and Claire Sullivan grab wins in consolation matches.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis women's tennis team had singles and doubles runs come to an end on the second day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, Friday.
Senior Hanna Sohn won her opening match in main draw singles, taking UT Martin's Asel Jumamukhambetova, 6-1, 6-4. But Sohn's run came to an end in the round of 32 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Middle Tennessee's Josefina Zehnder. Zehnder will advance to face third seeded Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt in the Round of 16.
In the bottom half of the same draw, sophomore Katherine Cao was facing No. 11 seeded Justina Mikulsykte of Kentucky. Mikulsykte prevailed, 6-1, 6-3, then grabbed another straight set win to move to the Round of 16, where she will face No. 2 seeded Ioanna Markesini of East Tennessee State.
In main draw doubles, the team of K. Cao and Claire Sullivan had advanced to face the second seed of the draw, the team of Smith and Kurtz from Vanderbilt. It was the Vanderbilt team that advanced to Saturday afternoon play with an 8-2 victory.
Memphis also had four players step on the court for main draw consolation matches on Friday. Sullivan and Josephine Cao both grabbed thrillers on the Friday the 13th matches. Cao defeated Cincinnati's Caroline Morton, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7, while Sullivan downed Dayton's Kelly Pleiman, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 10-6.
Two other Tigers dropped their matches in tiebreaks. Laura Bente won her opening set, 7-6 (0), but Indiana's Xiwei Cai came back with a 6-2 win in the second set. Cai then grabbed the tiebreak, 10-2, for the win.
Lina Hohnhold came back from a 6-2 first set loss to win her second set, 6-2, but Middle Tennessee's Lidia Burrows grabbed the 10-3 decision in the tiebreak for the victory.
Women's tennis' next scheduled event is the Alabama Invitational, Oct. 27-29th.
