Memphis Athletics Sets Nine Academic Records In 2016 Fall Semester

Department has 12th-straight semester with 3.0 or better GPA.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The numbers keep climbing for University of Memphis athletics – in the classroom.
For the 2016 fall semester, the Tigers athletics program recorded a school-record 3.176 department grade-point average (GPA). Memphis athletics' 2016 fall semester GPA bettered the previous record of 3.114 set in the 2016 spring semester.
It was the 12th-consecutive semester the athletics department posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and 14 of the 17 athletics programs had GPA of 3.0 and above. Among the female athletics teams, women's soccer carried the highest GPA at 3.782. For the men's athletics squads, men's golf recorded the highest GPA at 3.628.
"We all are proud of our student-athletes," said Dr. Bob Baker, director of the University's Center for Athletic Academic Services (CAAS). "They compete at the highest level in all sports, devote thousands of volunteer hours in the Memphis community and, as the numbers indicate, continue to excel academically despite tremendous time management challenges."
The Tigers athletics department also set eight additional GPA records for the 2016 fall semester. Those records were:
While the department's and teams' GPA were outstanding, the honored student-athletes' numbers were just as impressive. There were increases in 4.0 GPA, Dean's List honorees and Tiger 3.0 Club members from the 2016 spring semester:
In addition, the Memphis cheer and pom squads also had an excellent 2016 fall semester in the classroom. The two teams combined for four with 4.0 GPA, 20 on the Dean's List and 38 in the Tiger 3.0 Club.
The Tigers also performed well in their arenas of competitions in the 2016 fall semester. Among the highlights were:

- Women's soccer NCAA Tournament appearance
- Football's winning campaign and a Boca Raton Bowl berth
- Women's cross country's all-time best finishes at the American Athletic Conference and NCAA South Region championships
- Women's golf winning its own Memphis Women's Intercollegiate
- Men's cross country winning two team titles in the same season for the first time since 1998
The University of Memphis is on semester break, and classes resume Jan. 17.
