Former Tiger Men’s Tennis Players Win Doubles Wild Card to Memphis Open
Jan 04, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Connor Glennon and Cedric De Zutter win way to doubles main draw wild card.
MEMPHIS – Former University of Memphis men's tennis players Cedric De Zutter (2010-14) and Connor Glennon (2012-15) claimed the Southern Adult Indoor Open Doubles championship to end the 2016 calendar year. The win earned the former Tiger duo a wild card in to the doubles main draw of the ATP Memphis Open, set to be played at The Racquet Club of Memphis, Feb. 11-19th.
De Zutter currently serves as the volunteer assistant coach with the Memphis men's tennis program, which opens its 2017 spring dual season against Big 10 foe Michigan State on Jan. 20th, then hosts SEC opponent LSU on Jan. 22nd.
De Zutter and Glennon were doubles teammates in De Zutter's senior season at Memphis, which was also Memphis' third straight trip to the NCAA tournament. De Zutter was an all-conference honoree in doubles in 2013, helping Memphis to a Conference USA Championship and to the NCAA Round of 16.
Glennon was the first player in Memphis history to earn first-team all-conference honors for four straight seasons. He capped his career with a 77-34 overall singles record, playing a majority of his final three seasons at number one singles for a Memphis team that made multiple NCAA tournament appearances. His 34 wins at number one singles ranked second in school history to former Tiger player and coach Phil Chamberlain on his graduation.
This is the second straight season a former Tiger doubles tandem has won the wild card entry to the doubles draw of the ATP event in Memphis. Last year, former Tigers Dave O'Hare and Joe Salisbury won the wild card in to the draw. After that tournament appearance, the duo teamed together throughout the year on the ATP circuit, winning the ATP Columbus Challenger championship in November. O'Hare capped the year ranked number 150 in the world in ATP doubles, while Salisbury bounced back from a layoff due to illness to finish 318 in the doubles. Salisbury has already started his 2017 competition, competing in the USA F1 Futures event in California this week.
The Memphis Open is an ATP 250 level event and is played each February on the Memphis men's and women's tennis teams home courts at The Racquet Club of Memphis. While the ATP takes over the Racquet Club, the Tiger men's and women's tennis teams will train at other tennis facilities in the city or will play matches on the road. The men's team will play at Indiana, Feb. 17th, while the women's team will travel to Minnesota to face Missouri and Minnesota in a pair of non-conference matches, Feb. 18 and 19.
