Tigers Suffer Setback At SMU Tuesday

DALLAS – The University of Memphis women's basketball team was unable to overcome a fourth quarter push by SMU Tuesday night and fell by a score of 53-44 at Moody Coliseum. The Tigers fall to 10-12 overall and 3-6 in American Athletic Conference play. Memphis will see SMU later this season at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Feb. 22.

How It Happened
After SMU took an early 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game, the Memphis defense locked down and held the Mustangs scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. In the meanwhile, Memphis scored eight-straight to close out the first quarter down just 11-10 to SMU. The Tigers went 3-for-4 from the field with a pair of steals in that span.

Memphis continued to build its momentum through the second quarter, building its lead to as many as five after a Taylor Williams three-pointer with 11 seconds before intermission. The Tigers held SMU to just seven points in the second.

The Tiger lead grew to as many as nine with 4:07 remaining in the third before SMU came alive once again. SMU ended the third quarter on a 9-4 run to put Memphis up just two with 10 minutes to play.

With 5:50 to play in the game, SMU regained its lead for the first time since the 6:22 mark in the second quarter. Four more lead changes would ensue before the Mustangs took over the lead for good with 3:00 remaining in the game.

Turning Point
SMU used a 9-4 run to close out the third quarter to shift momentum its way. The Mustangs ultimately outscored the Tigers 18-7 in the fourth quarter.

- Damonique Miller got her first career start against the Mustangs.
- Brea Elmore extended her made three-point streak to 14 after hitting one in the first quarter.
- Elmore also set a career-high with seven assists for the Tigers.
- Milena Bajic recorded a career-high 10 rebounds in 24 minutes of action for Memphis. She finished the game with a block and four points.
- Taylor Williams led the team with 12 points. Breigha Wilder-Cochran had five steals.
- Memphis recorded 12 steals, making that the 10th time this season Memphis has recorded at least double-digit steals.
