Tigers senior was second in weight throw, third in shot put.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Luke Vaughn has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Vaughn is the second Tiger to earn league Athlete of the Week honors this season. In mid-December, Chardae Greenlee received The American Female Field Athlete of the Week accolade.
At the Jan. 27-28 A-State Invitational, Vaughn placed second in the men's weight throw (55-10.5; 17.03m) and third in the men's shot put (59-2.25; 18.04m). He was the Tigers' top finisher in both events at the Arkansas State-hosted meet.
It was the fifth time in his career that Vaughn placed in the top-three in both events at the same indoor meet. Vaughn's 59-2.25 shot put was the best indoor mark of his career. The throw also was .75 inches shy of the school record (59-3). Head coach Kevin Robinson set the program's shot put record of 59-3 in 1998 when he starred for the Tigers.
Vaughn, an East Peoria, Ill., native, won the American Athletic Conference outdoor shot put title in 2016 and earned an NCAA East Preliminaries spot in the event. At the 2015 league outdoor championships, Vaughn took the discus crown.
The Tigers men's and women's track and field squads return to action this weekend, Feb. 3-4 at the Don DeNoon Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. Southern Illinois is the host school for the meet.
