Tigers to face No. 18 Stanford, Sunday
MEMPHIS – The Memphis men's tennis team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season at No. 10 Northwestern (5-0) in first round action at the ITA Kick Off Weekend. Memphis will now face No. 18 Stanford in the consolation side of the bracket at 10 a.m.
Northwestern used wins at one and two doubles to take a 1-0 lead. That lead stretched to 2-0 when Sam Shropshire downed Kai Lemke, 6-3, 6-2, at three singles. That left Tigers Jan Pallares and Felix Rauch fighting to hold off the team point.
Pallares had dropped his first set, 6-4, but had fought back to 5-5 in the second set. Meanwhile, Felix Rauch had fought his way to a second set tiebreaker after dropping his opening set, 6-2, but Jason Seldman edged Rauch, 7-5, just as Ben Vandixhorn closed out his second set over Pallares, 7-5 to seal the win.
With the loss, Memphis will now face No. 18 ranked Stanford Sunday morning. Stanford was upended by Georgia Tech, 4-1, in the morning match at the Northwestern regional.
The winners of the Northwestern/Georgia Tech match will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships at the University of Virginia in February.
