Memphis Tigers Basketball Goes Beyond the Arc to Help Save Lives from Cancer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – More than 4,000 basketball coaches and staff from across the country will swap their dress shoes for sneakers for the fight against cancer for Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Week, January 23-29, 2017. Among them, Coach Tubby Smith also encourages fans, corporate partners and media to get in the excitement by joining his team's Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
Making 3-point shots this basketball season will take on additional meaning for Coach Smith and the Memphis Tigers basketball team as they launch the Tigers' 3-Point Challenge. Fans will now have the opportunity to pledge a dollar amount for every 3-pointer made by March 5. The funds raised will help the American Cancer Society continue its mission to improving and saving lives by doing the most to help people with cancer today and working tirelessly to find cures for the disease tomorrow.
Coach Smith and his staff will wear sneakers and launch the team's Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge during their games on the road against Temple on Wednesday, January 25, and at home against East Carolina on January 28 with a 2:30 p.m. tip-off.
More than 20 years ago, Norm Stewart, former head coach of the University of Missouri's men's basketball program, cancer survivor, and member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, provided the vision and inspiration to create Coaches vs. Cancer. He challenged fans to pledge a dollar amount for every 3-Point shot made by his team during the season. The concept, then called the 3-Point Attack, evolved into a nationwide effort uniting coaches, fans, players, and communities across the country to assist in the fight against cancer.
Fans can join Coach Smith's Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge PLEDGE IT campaign and donate for every 3-pointer by visiting: PledgeIt.org/CVC-Memphis. Fans can follow the competition nationally at http://www.3pointchallenge.org/.
