Women's Basketball Suffers Setback At Temple Saturday

Memphis unable to counter Temple's explosive third quarter
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Memphis women's basketball team suffered a 66-51 setback Saturday afternoon to the league-leading Temple Owls in Philadelphia, Pa. Memphis falls to 8-11 on the year and 1-5 in American Athletic Conference play. Temple was receiving votes in both the AP Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll.

How It Happened
Two quick fouls by Temple combined with a pair of free throws by Brea Elmore and a lay-up by Cheyenne Creighton opened the game up with Memphis up 4-0 on the Owls. The Tigers extended that first quarter lead to as many as five after Taylor Williams drained the first Tiger three-pointer of the game.

After Temple used a 5-0 run to tie the game up with 5:01 on the clock, the two teams had three lead changes throughout the remainder of the quarter. Memphis finished the first quarter outrebounding the Owls 13-6 while draining three, three-pointers.

The first six minutes of the second quarter brought seven lead changes before a three-pointer by Breigha Wilder-Cochran ignited a 9-2 Tiger run to close out the first half. Memphis led by six at intermission, its largest lead of the game.

Memphis scored first in the second half on a free throw by Breigha Wilder-Cochran, but a 16-0 run by Temple immediately following the Wilder-Cochran free throw proved to be the final lead change of the contest. Temple continued to increase its lead to as many as 22 with 3:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Turning Point
A 16-0 run in the first three and a half minutes of the third quarter by Temple put the Owls up by nine. Memphis answered with four points of its own, but was unable to recapture the lead over Temple.

The Tigers return home this week with a Wednesday night game against Houston. Notables
- Breigha Wilder-Cochran finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, marking her first career double-double at Memphis. It is the sixth double-double by a Memphis player this season. Creighton has five total.
- At the half, Memphis was outrebounding Temple 20-16. The Tigers finished the game with 37 rebounds as did the Owls.
- The five made three-pointers in the first half was the most hit by the Tigers in any half this season. The previous high was four on multiple occasions.
- Memphis had 11 assists on 18 made baskets.
- The Tigers recorded 14 steals, making that the eighth game this season that Memphis recorded double-digit steals.
