Memphis Remains On The Road With Trip To Temple Saturday

Temple is the first team Memphis will play twice during the conference schedule
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team looks to even the season series with Temple this Saturday with a 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET contest in Philadelphia, Pa. The Owls took the first game against the Tigers this season in overtime on New Year's Day. Saturday's game will broadcast on ESPN3.

Temple is the first conference team this season that Memphis will play twice. Overall, the Owls hold a 6-1 advantage over the Tigers with the lone Memphis win coming in the five-overtime game in 2016.

Memphis has an 8-10 overall record and 1-4 mark in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers conference victory came against UCF on the road on Jan. 7. Throughout the conference season, junior guard Brea Elmore has led the Tigers offensively. Through five American games, Elmore is averaging 15.4 points per game while making 44.4 percent of her shots, 41.7 percent of her three-pointers and 81.8 percent of her free throws. She has also made at least one three-pointer in the last 10 straight games.

Cheyenne Creighton leads the Tigers overall this season with 14.9 points per game and 7.7 rebounds. In addition to Creighton and Elmore (13.6 ppg), senior guard Taylor Williams is averaging in double-figures with 11.5 points per game.

This past week, the Memphis athletic department announced the contract extension of head coach Melissa McFerrin. McFerrin, who is in her ninth season at the helm of the Tiger program, is two wins shy of 200 in her career and 150 at Memphis.

In the last game against the Owls on Jan. 1, the teams went to overtime with Memphis ultimately falling by a score of 73-67. Cheyenne Creighton hit the game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer to force the game into overtime.
