MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As it settles in its new on-campus home, the University of Memphis rifle squad takes another break from its move to shoot in 2017 Roger Withrow Invitational Saturday, Jan. 21. Murray State serves as the host for the annual event.
The Tigers face plenty of competition Saturday, with Memphis one of eight ranked teams slated to shoot. Host and No. 3 Murray State, No. 5 Kentucky, No. 9 N.C. State, No. 11 Memphis, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 14 Jacksonville State, No. 19 UT Martin and No. 20 North Georgia all are competing in the Withrow Invitational.
Memphis still is in the process of moving to their on-campus home, the Memphis Rifle Facility. The Tigers' new range is located in South Hall, and will be ready to host Memphis' Jan. 28 home match versus Nebraska and Jacksonville State.
"We've had a couple of good days of practice during our move from one facility to another the past two weeks," said head coach Butch Woolbright. "Although we haven't been able to have full practices due to the move, this new facility will continue to help our program move forward.
"As for this weekend, we hope to be back close to where we were at the end of the fall semester."
Woolbright and his Tigers also hope to be back to full strength Saturday. In last Sunday's neutral-site Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) setback to Kentucky, seniors Jack Berhorst and Amy Fister and freshman Levi Clark all did not shoot.
Last Sunday's match versus Kentucky was Memphis' first since Nov. 20, taking a 50-plus day break from competition for final exams and the Christmas/New Year's holidays. The Tigers fell to the Wildcats, but freshmen Amberlie Ezell (air rifle) and Abby Votava (air rifle, aggregate score) set personal-bests.
At last season's Withrow Invitational, Memphis placed third behind Murray State and Nebraska.
