Tiger pair to join Canadian national team for first camp of 2017
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers Marie Levasseur and Valerie Sanderson have been called up to camp for the full Canadian Women's National Team. The team will convene in Los Angeles, Calif. for the first training camp of 2017 on January 20.
"Having two of our players called into full national team camp is a testament to not only those players, but also to the success of our program," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Marie and Valerie were a major part of the results we had this season. This is a great accomplishment for both of them and an honor for this university to have student-athletes represent their country."
The training camp will serve as a reorientation and conditioning camp for core members of Canada Soccer's Women's National Team and as a key opportunity to assess additional players, some who have previously made senior team appearances as well as new faces who have come up through Canada's EXCEL program.
Levasseur has represented her country a number of times since joining the University of Memphis, playing in the 2015 Pan American games, earning her first call-up to the full national team later in 2015, and playing with the U-20 team twice in 2016. She is one of two current NCAA Division-I players on the 22-player Canadian Roster, joining West Virginia's Amandine Pierre-Louis.
Heading into her junior season in 2017, Levasseur has 11 career goals and nine assists. She was a first team all-conference player in 2016 and the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2015.
Sanderson is receiving her first call-up to the full Canadian Women's National Team. She last represented her country at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Canada. Sanderson also played in the 2012 U-17 World Cup with Canada in Azerbaijian.
"For a player like Valerie, to work as hard as she has and not necessarily receive the accolades, to finally get called in is truly rewarding to see as a coach. With the contributions that she has made at this university and all the records she holds, to have to the opportunity to go represent her country again is massive," said Monaghan.
A four-time all-conference player, Sanderson ended her career as the Tigers' all-time leading goal-scorer season with 52 goals. The Boisbriand, Quebec native, also holds the program's career points record with 122. She scored 16 career game-winning goals and holds the program record with 12 multiple-goal matches. In her senior season, she scored 16 goals and 39 points, which are both the most by a senior in school history.
Canada will take on Mexico in an international friendly in Vancouver on Saturday, February 4 at BC Place for the team's first match of the year.
