Freshmen Ezell, Votava post season bests.
OXFORD, Miss. – University of Memphis' Haylea Broughton and Makennon Doran posted aggregate scores of over 1150, but it wasn't enough in the Tigers' Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) setback to Kentucky Sunday.
The match was originally scheduled with Memphis as the host, but with the team still in the process of moving to its on-campus home, the venue was switched to the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 5 in the nation, defeated No. 10 Memphis 4660-4607. Kentucky won both the smallbore (2298-2268) and air rifle (2362-2339) disciplines.
Broughton led the Tigers with a 1153 aggregate score and placed seventh, and Doran was eighth with a 1151 aggregate score. Doran had Memphis' highest smallbore performance with a 577 and placed third. Broughton recorded top-10 scores in both disciplines, finishing sixth in air rifle (586) and eighth in smallbore (567).
Freshman Amberlie Ezell led the Tigers in air rifle with a season-high 589 score. She had a team-best, fourth-place finish Sunday. Her 1145 aggregate score was one point shy of tying her season-high 1146, which she set at Nov. 12 Buckeye Open.
Fellow freshman Abby Votava had two season highs versus the Wildcats. Her 1142 aggregate score was a season best, along with her 579 air rifle result. Votava placed in the top-10 in both disciplines.
Seniors Jack Berhorst and Amy Fister and freshman Levi Clark did not shoot in Sunday's match.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, Jan. 21 when they travel to Murray, Ky., for the annual Withrow Invitational.
