Tigers junior named The American Male Runner of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis junior Julian Sanchez-Pinto has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It is the third time this season a Tigers runner, male or female, has received the weekly accolade. Senior Martina Rodriguez Sala of the women's squad earned the league's Female Runner of the Week recognition Sept. 6 and Sept. 20.
Last Saturday, Sanchez-Pinto led the Tigers men's squad to its second invitational championship in as many weeks. Memphis won the Austin Peay Invitational last Saturday and also claimed the Rhodes College Invitational title Sept. 17. It is the first time the Memphis men's program had two first-place team finishes in the same season since 1998.
Sanchez-Pinto won his first NCAA Division I cross country individual crown, crossing the finish line in first place at last Saturday's Austin Peay Invitational. He completed the 4-mile course in a time of 21:06. He is the first Tigers male runner to win an individual title since James Maglasang won the 2013 Rhodes College Invitational men's title.
The San Sebastián, Spain, native has been the Tigers' top finisher in all three races this season. Sanchez-Pinto placed eighth at the season-opening Brooks Twilight Classic Sept. 3 and was runner-up at the Sept. 17 Rhodes College Invitational.
Sanchez-Pinto is a junior college transfer from Colby Community College in Colby, Kan. In 2015, he placed in the top-20 at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Cross Country Championships.
The Memphis men's team is off from competition this week and returns to action at the Oct. 14 Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Tigers women's team is competing in the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., this Saturday. The meet begins at 8 a.m. (CT).
